Big 4

An elegant 19th Century house designed in a grand colonial style (in direct contrast to the "Berber" dwellings in the Alpujarras). It is situated in the village of Jorairátar, close to the Fountain Square and only a short drive to amenities and facilities.

The house has great potential as a guesthouse, walkers/cyclists hostal, or a house-let for courses/retreats. It has some rooms 4.5metres high, and all restored original woodwork and ironwork on the front. It has huge thick stonewalls designed to keep it cool in summer and warm in winter. The internal construction is modern technology there are I-beams of strengthened concrete holding all floors upon existing and specially constructed pillars. The wiring, sockets, fuses and meter are all new and meet current standards.

Approx 306 m2 plus 69 m2 patio.

Ground floor.
The main entrance to the house is via huge antique wooden double doors into the hallway. 2.4mx4.2m.The floors throughout the house are tiled in rustic terracotta handmade tiles. On the left is a door into a room 4.0x4.3 and 4m high. It has huge antique French style windows, shutters, and irons to the front. There is a window seat and lovely recessed curved ceiling into the window.

Entering the inner hallway 3.0mx3.3m there is a cloakroom on the immediate left 1.5mx4m. Just next to this is a grand staircase 1.3m wide which leads up to the first floor where light floods down from a feature skylight. Off the main downstairs hallway to the right is a huge L shaped room with another smaller set of antique double doors to the street. This could be converted into a restaurant/function room or cycle hire shop, it is currently a spacious lounge. There is an open fireplace, a feature glass brick "window" and access to the Kitchen, consisting of the main kitchen 5m x 3.5m with a separate pantry 2.1mx2.0m. The kitchen has built in antiqued pine kitchen units, with granite work surfaces, and tiled splash backs, built in cooker and hob, with extractor fan. There is a double sink, fridge freezer and dishwasher. There is an antiqued pine window and restored double doors onto the inner courtyard.

The courtyard has a small rock garden feature and established wisteria tree.
From the private courtyard you enter the covered corral, measuring 3.35x7.25 with an extra separate raised area 2.75x1.95 with glass brick "window" to Lounge. The stairs from the corral take you up to the mid terrace and further stairs lead up to the huge roof terrace, approx120m2 with panoramic views. In front of the house is a small peaceful road and directly opposite the house, there is a garden- allotment that has almond trees and lots of potential to use as a secret orchard and herb garden.

Second Floor
From the main staircase the second floor opens onto an upper landing, the original double doors to the right lead onto two adjoining front bedrooms, both with original balconies, antique doors and shutters with fantastic country views. The first room (2.75mx4.27) and the larger room (3.96mx3.51) are light and airy. Plus there is a self contained area consisting of: an upper lounge room with a wood burner and TV Arial socket. Local area
The village is under 15 minutes away from Ugijar, via a brand new, widened road from the village. In Ugíjar there are primary & secondary schools (newly built), shops restaurants, bars, a swimming pool, department store, 2 car dealerships, 2 banks, internet cafés, municipal market & casualty department etc. Jorairátar also has 2 mini-supermarkets and two bars of its own. There is a new direct highway being constructed due for completion 2009, from the El Ejido road at Cherin linking Ugíjar, Yátor and Cádiar to the rest of the Alpujarras. This will reduce driving time to the coast by at least 20 minutes from Jorairátar.
